“Difficult is the way that leads to life & there are few who find it” Matt. 7:13

This way is only hard if you trust something else, if you make someone or something else your choice. The way of righteousness is difficult for the hard of heart, the unbelieving, & the unrepentant. It’s difficult because our tendency is toward selfishness, doing what is “good” for us & paying no attention to what is good for other people. What makes it even more difficult is that our entire world is inundated with works-righteousness, legalism, religion, & it takes a lot of effort to change our mindset. Once the mind is set, people stop thinking for themselves, listening to God, & asking questions because they think they already have the answers.

Tradition compounds an already complex problem. Jesus said, “Through your traditions (culture) you have made the Word of God of no effect” (Mk. 7:13). Emasculating the Word of God isn’t intentional, but it happens because we don’t seek intimacy & connection with God for ourselves. We don’t see the Holy Spirit as our Teacher. We don’t see Jesus as our Shepherd to lead us through every challenge of life & only into victory.

This way is only hard if you trust something else, if you make someone or something else your choice. This is the one question you must ask yourself: Is my way hard or is my way easy & light? Do I abound in peace & joy? Do I find the things I need to contribute to my quality of life effortlessly as I follow Jesus in my daily life? If not, maybe I’ve never really surrendered my way for His.
