For years, as a new believer, when various pastors would talk about prayer I would ask them to show me what they meant in their teaching. In other words, teach me how to pray! At first, no one would respond to the request; then in later years when some did, I noticed that almost without exception they violated the things Jesus said not to do when we prayed. I finally did what I should have done all along—I studied how Jesus prayed and copied Him. After all, if He is our Lord and Master, His teaching and lifestyle should be the preeminent influence in every aspect of our life. If we believe what the person believes who taught us to pray, our results will be no better than theirs.
