It’s so easy to miss the point of God’s Word or even Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. Jesus said He came so we could have life to its fullest. God wants you to have the best there is. Why? Because God is love. He created us to be the recipients and givers of His love. By the time religion twists the Scriptures and our image of God and beats us down with rules and regulations it’s hard for anyone to get back to the basic goal of God in our life.
Since God only created us to abide in relationships it’s important that we be able to give to others what He has given to us: love! Everything in His Word is designed to show us how to do just that. Paul said, the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith. In other words, every teaching, commandment or instruction that God has ever given is to accomplish this goal.
There may be more talk of love in the world today than any other time in history; yet, the world is becoming more and more violent. There’s talk of justice; yet, there’s only justice for the offender. There’s talk of tolerance; yet, our society is becoming more intolerant. How can this happen? Simple: mankind is attempting to establish his own definition of love, justice and tolerance completely independently of God’s Word, i.e. instruction. 2 John 6 says, this is love that we walk according to His commandments.
When we define love, justice, fairness, tolerance or any other human interaction independently of God’s Word we actually corrupt ourselves and society.
