    Seeing beyond our blindness

Never realised before how much judging others blinds us, even passing so-called “good” judgment! As Dr Richards says, even when we judge others positively, we have still judged. We have nevertheless attributed a motive to a person’s behaviour, which is the essence of judging. (I have figured out why the person “ticks” and make myself into a mini-god.)

I found it very helpful that we are to look at the fruit (simply making observations) of a person’s life, but to avoid judgment. I can see the fruit of a person’s life (and take appropriate action) but I need not judge.

Equally helpful is that every person has the responsibility for what they “write on their heart.” See Chapter 14, “Becoming like little children.” Finally I understand how I can re-write the mostly negative stuff which I unknowingly wrote on my heart.

If your heart is hurting, this book is a must. This book convinced me like no other, that it is impossible to have a hurting heart, and not have judged others.

    Very perceptive, very helpful.

This book has totally impacted my life. While the title doesn’t really reflect it, the real issue is how we constantly make judgments about other people’s motives. Judging the fruit of their actions is one thing, and we are told in Scripture to know people by their fruit. What we cannot do is know their true heart motives. In fact, we often don’t even know our own heart motives. Judging others opens the door for us to be judged and it is those judgments, often incorrect, that we cannot escape. Once someone has decided what we believe or decided why we did something, we can rarely change their opinion. This book has made me very conscious of just how many times – in any given day – I have passed judgment or heard someone else do so. GREAT BOOK.

I never realized I lived my whole life judging everything by MY standard..I even judged myself by standards I established in my perception before I was mature enough to have any real understanding of human interactions..Dr.Richards’ teaching helps me observe the behavior of others without making judgments about it —and trust God’s love FOR me and acceptance OF me because of JESUS’ finished work and not MY WORKS……

Excellent! Very practical ways to deal with emotional pain.

This book is excellent. It gives the reader very practical ways to deal with emotional pain. Most of us are wounded emotionally to some degree. Some of the initial wounds may have occurred in our childhood, and then continue into our adult lives. This adversely impacts our ability to function in healthy relationships. There is a saying that no matter where we go there we are. This book explains how that occurs. We develop a mindset that reconfirms the internal message we are worthless. Rather than just observing what happens around us, we make judgments about the people and situations and in so doing give those people and situations significance in our lives. That brings the emotional pain and suffering.

This book helps us to look at our thinking and the false beliefs we have developed. It gives us Biblical references and helps us look at those references in new ways. Our perceptions may have been distorted when reading the Bible causing us to misunderstand what the Bible was telling us. One scripture reading: “judge not lest you be judged”, is not about God judging us when we judge others. It is about others judging us when we judge them. This book’s author tells the reader that brings emotional pain and suffering into our lives. He goes on to give the reader new ways to look and perceive things. The book tells us we will still experience pain in our lives when adverse circumstances occur, but we don’t have to continue in that pain and suffer. He tells how we can stop the suffering.

  5. Rosegartenon

This book is full of information on how to be free from a judgmental attitude, and clarifies to the reader the difference between discernment and judgment. It is not our job to judge and to me that is quite liberating because you do not realize how much energy is spent judging and that, erroneously. Our job is to love and there is much more freedom when we just walk in the love of Christ. Through judging, we hold onto the things we need to let go of and that is hurt and unforgiveness. Thanks for making it clear to us that we can be free from the hurt.

    This will stop your pain!!

This is such a wonderful read……….kudos to Dr James B. Richards as this book is a book to be kept in your tool belt!!
Helps you to get free of the lies and judgements that reside in our heart due to traumas we have endured. Like the cover
says, “Pain in inevitable but suffering is optional”!!

*Best book I have ever read on forgiveness!*
This book was recommended to me by a friend, and it turned out to be a life changer with those that are dealing with forgiveness. Richards focuses on how our judgments of others can severely damage our relationships. I was amazed at the spiritual depth that is apparent from many years of counseling others and a spiritually deep man that understands human depravity and at the same time delivers Godly solutions. This is a must read for every believer, especially those that take serious God’s call to forgive others.

  8. Georgia Girl

I honestly can say this is one of the BEST books I’ve bought in a long time

This book is truly LIFE CHANGING if you will only apply what he teaches. This book came in a time of my life that I either had to change the way I think or go crazy! I choose to realign my thinking and how I judged people as well as myself. This book is healing! I honestly can say this is one of the BEST books I’ve bought in a long time. I think it is properly named because it really will stop the pain in your life! Absolutely extraordinary book and highly favored to say the least!

  9. Camille LeNoiron

    Life Changing!
This book has easily become 1 of my top 3 books ever read (1. Bible 2. Heaven by Randy Alcorn). I mean, wow! It was cutting (I had to walk away from it several times to ruminate on what I’ve learned about myself), it offered a new perspective on well known scriptures, and I have walked away changed, ready to love, and stop judging myself, others, and God. I just finished the book and plan to reread it immediately, more slowly, and make a plan to live out his practical suggestions.

  10. Jamie Gon

This is the number one book I walk through with clients who are seeking to become better in leadership. This is the most pivotal book for change that has happened in my life and the lives of those in my family.

The chapters are short and you can use it as a daily read or a devotional.

You’ll be grateful that you purchased this book!

  11. Eric

Really good stuff! So much good foundational truth to chew on. I will be reviewing my highlights, and there are a lot of them. A lot! I especially found this applicable to me because I tend toward turning my critical thinking skills into judgments. This has gotten me into more trouble in my marriage than I previously understood because I always was taking the speck out of my husband’s eye rather than seeing my log. This book came at a really good time for me and was recommended by a friend who is a clinical therapist. I recommend it. The only parts I am not sure how I felt about were his couple of points he seemed to make that physical healing is ours when we stop judging… not sure if I understood him correctly on that.

  12. Abi Lopez

    AWESOME BOOK

  13. WILL

Insightful – Full of Inner Sight

“This is one of the most important books that I have ever read! I wish that I had this information growing up. The key to limiting or eliminating suffering is discovered within the teaching of this text. You may be saying to yourself, “”I’ll be the judge of that””. All I would say in return is, absolutely, you certainly are. Discover freedom, true freedom from offense ad infinitum.

It has made such an impact on my perspective that my life is now free from the chains of the past. I am now doing a small group on this book and I am personally witnessing the ongoing epiphany that each person is experiencing on a weekly basis.”

  14. Shelby

    “Excellent read. Highly recommend!”

  15. W.W.

One of the most heart, mind, and life changing books I’ve ever read. A friend recommended this book on Facebook. I thought, I’ll give it a try…I am tempted to judge occasionally. As I began to read the book I realized I had not understood what judgement is, and that I had misunderstood several scriptures my entire adult life, and that I judged my own and others’ and God’s motives constantly….and that it was destructive to myself and my relationships. I also learned how I could stop judging and start loving. I most highly recommend this book to all peoples.

  16. Bill

I recommend this book to anyone dealing with pain from relational dysfunction. Pain from judgment is at the heart of conflict in relationships. The author helps the reader to peel back the layers and provide solutions for stopping the pain. The chapters are concise and easy to read.

  17. Tammy

One of the best books I have ever read…..not just reading it, but when you apply the principles it can revolutionize your life. Highly recommend this book and the author to anyone who is wanting to be free from emotional pain, be more transparent in their spiritual life, and grow deeper with God. I am now watching all of the author’s videos on Youtube along with reading his books!!

  18. Sue

For anyone trying to get through life dealing with their past (or their present), this is the book. It helps to show the reader that many of the perspectives and attitudes are results of previous judgments made against other people. When you learn to let go of those previous judgments and not assume the reasons of others or attribute reasons to their actions, you learn to be free and you can finally lose (loose) the weights that have been binding you.

A great read for anyone that wants to better their walk in life by recognizing the box of pain that we put ourselves inside by living in a world of judgment. I would recommend this book to any person that seeks improvement in relationships with those around them. And to recognize the barriers that we create in having a loving relationship with others by the judgment that has been woven into our lives by living in a world that is based upon judgment.

An Enlightening Read and a Powerful Message

A great read for anyone that wants to better their walk in life by recognizing the box of pain that we put ourselves inside by living in a world of judgment. Help in a needed area.

Most of the book did not apply to my needs. Either that or I missed the point. But the last few chapters were a tremendous help and encouragement to me. The main theme of the book is judgement, but I did not see that in the title, so what I was looking for was not there. Still it did help me to see things that I needed in my life, and I underlined a number of passages I would like to review later. I am glad I bought the book.

  23. Emily w

Life Changing!!! I look Forward to Reading this Book Everyday!

This is a great read if you are open to the changes that the book is requesting. If you are frustrated with your life and relationships and are willing to put in the work thats needed, then definitely read this book.

  24. Tom D

I am only half way through this book, and I am already thinking about my relationships and how judgements may have brought pain in those relationships. It really makes you think about the guidelines that Jesus has for relationships and where I stand. Because of this book I have already safely navigated some difficult experiences – for example, a cashier at a small store who deliberately went out of her way to ignore or belittle me (even the owner of the store who saw it was very apologetic) but I didn’t get offended because I was able to be objective about it and compassionate to the woman. I highly recommend this book.

  25. Mike L

Eye opening, paradigm shifting, and very practical. Wish I’d known this stuff years ago, as it would have saved a lot of heartache & disappointment in relationships. Highly recommend this for everyone!

” I have found this to be an outstanding tool, not only in my own life but in the lives of the women I minister to. Since reading this book and applying the scriptural principals, I have had remarkable success at improving my personal communications, especially communicating with my husband. I was shocked when I actually realized how often I judged his motives one way, and upon asking him “”why”” found I was completely off base in my assessment…. What a blessing.
I found myself recommending this book so often to my women at our church, that I finally ordered 20 copies and set up a bible study group… the women can not stop talking about how the main principals of this book are helping them… Don’t judge motives, apply forgiveness, allow others to have the information they need to repent when they offend or harm you, and fix yourself first… just for starters 🙂
Please take the time to read this book and search out the scriptures used… apply the scriptures. You will regain peace in your life.”

  28. Cindy Q

This book along with Breaking the Cycle changed my life. I was raised in an environment with extremely legalistic views. I lived under guilt condemnation and judgement for years. These books break principles in the Word of God down into bite size pieces so you can understand how to apply them

  29. Mark K

    A true life changer!

This book was recommended to me by a friend who felt it had helped her to change her paradigm on her hurts from a church. She was right, it is a life changer! I purchased two, one for myself and one for my husband and we have had a huge change of heart and shift in our thinking. SO GOOD! I highly recommend this book for anyone, but especially to those with significant church wounds…well, significant wounds of any kind!

  30. Susie N

“James Richards took the complex process of becoming healthy in relationships and broke it down into 36 easy read short chapters. He looks at one aspect of relationships in each chapter and presents the common practice in various examples, what is underlying it, biblical examples that support a God intended, healthier way, and changes he has made himself.

I particularly liked the short chapter format with the weight of each issue masterfully presented, unfolded with examples, and real life understanding to observe and apply.

I recommend this book highly and it is a must have in our library to give away!”

  31. Paul m

If you are serious about healing and have a heart to pursue the Lord this is a very insightful and helpful book. It would be helpful for those who want to minister to hurting people. Very easy to understand. I really enjoyed this book.

  32. Jim H

This book has helped my husband and I and we will continue to re read it often. It has helped us to change our attitudes and lives.

  33. John W

One of the best books on emotional healing ever! These principals, understood and applied will definitely change your life! As I have chosen to observe and not judge over the last ten years my life has totally changed for the better.

  34. Stephanie l

I haven’t completed the book yet as I have reread some of the chapters over and over again. Wow do I wish I had this book years and years ago!!! I would recommend this book to anyone who may be struggling in relationships, even their relationship with Jesus. Of course, we can read this book but only when the principles are applyed will a change actually take place. So thankful for people who go through things, God frees them and then they share openly so others can be free. Thank you Mr. Richards!!!

  35. Frank B

“This book has opened up a part of me that has been idle for all of my life. The title is true to its name….we deal with pain on a daily, moment by moment basis. Most of us do not realize this as being a part of our lives because we just ACCEPT this as normal. This book has shown me that this is not necessary to accept! I learned that we unknowingly judge ourselves and others more that we can imagine.

Giving my life to Jesus and reading about His teachings has taught me more of Him and what He came down on earth to accomplish. I look forward to my second reading of this book, I know I will gain more insight! I highly recommend this read to anyone wanting to improve their christian walk! Get ready for some to the point, it is what it is readings.”

  36. Luke H

This book is the best explanation of why we feel bitterness toward others. Sometimes we mis-interpret the actions of others because we don’t know what is going on with them. This book will be revisited over and over again.

  37. Lydia T

My group of 15 ladies have gone through this book over 7 months. They all said it has helped them tremendously. As one friend said “This book has saved my bacon more than once”. Very timely in our lives. It was a God thing finding Dr. James Richards and all his books, CDs, and Website. He’s a country boy so he suits me fine.

  38. Barb R

    Amazing healing for pain!!

There really is healing for the pain of the present and the future. This will rock your walk with God in a new an amazing way. I highly recommend this book and wish that I could buy a case to give out to all my friends and family.

  39. Matt P

This book gives one good food for thought. It is written from a Christian perspective, and helps people learn to relate to others in more healthy ways. Helpful.

  40. Sandy F

This is a wonderful book! Don’t wait until you are in a crisis, read it now! Countless relationships could be salvaged if people would invest more time into understanding how to better relate to one another honestly, but with love. Buy two, one to keep and read over again and one to lone to others.

  41. Sam V

The title of this caught my attention, but this book went in a direction I would never have expected. This was truly life changing and a book I need to refer to , over and over again.

  42. Ava K

I would like to say that I appreciate this book as a Christian psychologist, for the help and encouragement it can provide to hurting people. But the truth is, it helped me. I understand the Gospel as though for the first time. I am so grateful for this book.

  43. Jeannie T

Every body needs to read this! It is an excellent expose on how judging others and receiving the judgments and opinions of others hurts everyone! Please get this book and take it to heart!

  44. TEDdie M

Pastor Richards’ messages always go beyond “what does the Bible mean?” to “what does the Bible mean for my life today?” This is why his teachings are so practical, embracing the whole man–the body, mind and spirit. His mission is to change the way the world sees God, and he has done that for me. God is no longer a taskmaster that can not be pleased; I now see that God completely delights in me and this confidence in the love of God is revolutionary. I highly recommend any of Dr. Richard’s books, along with his Heart Physics 30 day meditation program. I have met him in person, and he is very real and genuine and imperfect! It is very refreshing.

  45. Harry L

A very real and practical view on loving others the right way. I would highly recommend to anybody Christ follower or not. The thoughts Dr. Richards outlines when applied will change your life!

  46. Lou J

This is an excellent find on how we work body mind and soul in the quest to block spiritual dysfunction causing pain…a must read if one wants to better understand this phenomena.

  47. Rick B

A hard concept to grasp but well worth the effort. I have put some of these principles into action and they are very helpful.

  48. Christian C

If you can change your mind, you can change your world. This book has been instrumental in helping me renew my mind in Christ. It has helped me a great deal with letting go of shame and lack of forgiveness from my past. Read only if you want to be changed.

  49. Emma T

This book helped me see my emotional hurt and how to deal with it in the middle of the chaotic world. It gives super good insight into thinking about emotions and feelings rightly in line with what’s actually real rather than the reality I create from my own limited view. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to grow and see their lives freed from living up to the expectations of others and desiring to live the life God has called them to!

  50. Michael B

A book of a pastor’s upbringing that is heartbreaking but it is inspirational because he gives a spiritual spin on how to cope.

  51. Jay J

Dr Richards brings healing and focus to our hearts and souls by pointing out the reason we can be self-loathing, lack inner peace, and find difficulty in having healthy life-giving relationships. Recommend it strongly!

  52. Martin N

Every Christian should read this book. Dr. Richards fully explains why being judgmental causes us so much pain and robs us of our joy. He also clarifies who the real culprit is!

  53. George S

I gave it a top rating because it offers the reasons and answers to our pain. Thereby meeting the title requirements.

  54. Jill M

The book is sound in what the author offers. If it is put into practice it can be the tool that will assist in setting a person free from the cycle of pain and help in correcting thought pattern that is destructive Great help .

  55. Susan H

This is one of those books, I wish I could give to everyone I know. I’m 62 and have been a Christian for more than 30 years, yet I found How to Stop the Pain life changing. It is packed with scriptural truths that brought me brand new revelations. The Holy Spirit used this book to bring conviction and correction in areas that I thought I had already dealt with. I’m beginning my second read and looking forward to more pearls of wisdom.

  56. Joe C

I had no idea how devastating being judgmental is to me. Self judgment has caused me years of pain. I am dedicating my life to live in love, which is promised to be a new realm I can’t wait to experience…!

This book was exactly what I needed at just the right time. I would never have picked up this book based on the title, but in sharing with a friend I was directed to this book. I am so happy I was.

  59. Brian R

This book opened my eyes to my wrong way of thinking. I never realized I judged people so much. I felt a weight lift off of me.

  60. Katie L

  62. James L

Great message. Love this book. Lots to learn and use in life. Would recommend this to everyone that wants to improve their lives.

  63. Mike T

This book is teaching how to take back the control I’ve given to others. So many times the judgements we place on each other becomes our option of that persons actions . How’re Stop the Pain has been instrumental in showing how Jesus showed love and mercy without judgement.

  64. Simon R

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is easy to read and filled with truth that will help anyone find freedom from pain.

  65. JOseph D

There is so much I can say about this awesome book, but I’ll just stick to the basics. This is one of the books that has really transformed my life. I was so impacted by it I decided to do a teaching on it. This book is a must READ!!!

  66. John R

I am in the middle of the book but it is not what I expected…better. Meets a deep need inside about judgements and expectations. Needed to figure this out.

  67. Elizabeth B

I am challenged every time I read this book. Challenged to remember the price that was paid by Christ for us. And the price I have paid for organized religion. If you want to find the relationship that fills the hole in your heart, it can only be filled by God. This book helped me realize that I can enter that relationship NOW, not some day in the future. Time to get off the religious Merry-Go-Round and get on with a life that is full of Christ’s love. This book has set me free.

  68. Derek G

I overlooked this book for years because it sounded like a self-help fixit. After I actually started reading it, i was bombarded by the wisdom shown on every page. Dr. Richards has placed his finger on the biggest source of pain we ever experience and he very simply describes the Biblical solution. I highly recommend it.

  69. Nate E

This book clarifies misunderstanding about judgement and how to renew your mind so that we can live like Jesus intended for us to live.

  70. April H

Absolutely amazing read. If you’re considering this buy, just do it. You will not regret it. I’m so happy that I have it on my phone to refer to it anytime. It’s God-inspired, faith motivating, spirit energizing, better than coffee, life changing words. Life words!

  71. Abby W

This book is a great self help. Forgiveness is the number one goal that I think everyone should try to achieve. Once you have forgiven someone the burden has been lifted. This books helps you to realize the importance of forgiveness.

  72. Maggie O

Before I read this book a good friend of mine would often quote from it or use what Dr. Richards said trying to convince me to stop my judgment of others. I thought he was foolish for letting go of the “gift” of judgment. I held on to the pain others had caused me for my entire Christian journey. I actually felt I was benefitting from filtering every experience through my own judgmental “lenses”. I was harshly critical of my brothers and sisters in Christ and of the delegated authority God had placed me under. I ended up reading the book, and the Holy Spirit used it to set me free from my judgmental mindsets. The quote on the front –“pain is inevitable. suffering is optional” is the best summary of this book. People will hurt you-they are people, after all. But YOU make the choice to hold on to that pain or to let it go and live in freedom-it could be the most important decision you ever make as a Christian. This book above all others has CHANGED MY LIFE. I recommend it to absolutely everyone. The many applicable bible passages are collected and expounded on in this one resource. Get it!

  73. Connor M

Dr. Richards delves into a difficult topic with grace, wisdom, and creativity. I’ve read other books about moving out of judgment, but have never seen the concept addressed with so much clarity. This is one of those books I revisit periodically, to digest the wisdom and see how I am doing applying it to my life. I recommend this book to anyone who is suffering in a relationship.

  74. Daniel G

When I started reading the book I was skeptical but I decided not to ‘judge’ it until I had read it all. There were two or three translation quotations that I took exception to, however, I remember something my father taught me growing up on the farm.
We would buy flour in 25 pound cloth bags. When we opened the bag, we would many times find weevils (smal bugs or worms) or small rocks in the floor. The first time I saw this, I told my father the flour was ruined and that we would have to throw it away. Dad said, “”No, we will just pour it into a floor sieve and let the good flour fall through into a bowl to be used in cooking; the screen in the sift will catch the bugs and rocks and we will throw THEM away.””
What a powerful and wise lesson my father taught me. I don’t have to agree with EVERYTHING a person says in order for me to received something from God and be Blessed.
Thank you Dr. Richards. The book came into my life at a point when I really needed it!

  75. Jake D

Amazing book. Even for someone that isn’t really hurting, but just looking for growth or things from a different perspective. Just really a book of wisdom!

  76. wes M

Most people have no idea of how many judgements they have made over their life time that keep them in bondage. This book will expose the way you think and the significance you placed on actions of other people that really were not about you in the first place. This book is excellent material for a small group book study.

  77. david P

Life Changing book! We have been Spirit Filled lay leaders in our church for over 25 years and this book is revolutionizing our approach to every relationship we have!

I was recommended this book by my older sister. When reading it I found myself thinking “Wow.. this is why I continue to go around the mountain time after time”. Reliving pain over and over again in one’s lifetime can be so destructive. Applying Dr. Richards balm of Godly applications to your long open wounds will allow them to finally heal. You have a choice in letting go of pain and being free of self judgement and the judgement of others. This book is priceless!

The topic of judging others and its fruit is a bit tough to “”own”” but I’ve found that my judgements have impacted every area of my life. Walking free of the need to judge others and even myself has been liberating.
    I highly recomend this book.

“Every time I read one of James Richards books (I’ve read five) I declare it to be the “”most amazing”” Christian teaching book Ive ever read!

How To Stop The Pain truly delivers a ‘most amazing’ biblical view on a difficult, rarely embraced (personally embraced) subject. I have underlining on nearly every page!

This is NOT one of those “”C’mon solider, pull your self up by the boot straps, suck it up, stuff it down and “”act”” like a good Christian”” books! At no point will you feel condemned, instead you will feel motivated and greatly encouraged to truly release the source of the pain in your life.

Imagine what life would be like if you never got your feelings hurt, got offended, felt inadequate or judged again…….

    Joy,

    Peace,

    FREEDOM.

If you really what to break out of some paradigms, this is the read for you.

Get ready to enjoy many many “”ah-ha”” revelations.

“”It IS for freedom that Christ set us free””

“How to review a book about judgements? 😉
I picked this book up at a local bookstore on Dec. 24, 2012 the day after I had first visited a prayer group at my new church. One older woman was dealing with a 22 year old substance abusing nephew who was just getting out of the local jail and was saying that he was leaving town that day and none of the family would ever see him again. Another young woman was so upset over the Newtown shooting tragedy that she could hardly function. I’ve had a bad year, too, so a book entitled, “”How to Stop the Pain”” seemed like a good choice.
And, actually it’s a pretty good book. It covers the topic of judgement and relationships pretty well. I benefited from the chapters on self-judgement. At times the chapters seemed a little scattered about to me. I laughed at myself when I found myself not particularly interested in reading the chapter on being a fool. But there are some particularly good thoughts on when humans judge God. The author makes a good argument for his answer. And, the book ends with some nice encouragements.
The book seemed to have held up well in the years since September, 2001 and still seems to have something to offer the hurting.”
