If separation is spiritual death, then according to Jesus’ own words He died spiritually.Spiritual death is a term that few people understand. Death is separation. Physical death happens when the spirit is separated from the body (James 2:26). Spiritual death is the state of being separated from God. On the cross, after becoming the sin of all mankind, Jesus spoke these words, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me” (Matthew 7:26)? He wasn’t merely quoting Scripture. Part of paying the full price for our sins was that He would be separated from God in death! Since every aspect of Jesus’ death was substitutional, He suffered the curses of the law so we would be delivered from them (Galatians 3:13). If separation is spiritual death, then according to Jesus’ own words He died spiritually. But the great news is since He was alienated from God in His death, we will never experience that separation. That’s why now when a believer dies he or she goes immediately into the presence of the Lord.
