Paul said the purpose of all of God’s instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith.Paul said the purpose of all of God’s instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith. God’s commandments are His instructions for how we should walk in love. They tell us how to treat one another. Since all the law with its true intentions are written on the deepest part of our heart; when we fail to express love based on God’s Word it violates our heart, thus we experience an unhealthy conscience i.e. guilt or distress.

The commandments tell us how to walk in love, which fulfills our true righteous nature. Grace makes us able to walk in love by God’s power. A person who walks in God’s definition of love is in the light and will not be deceived; they will not cause their brother or sister to fall. They will operate in God’s kind of faith!

Paul said, Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good (Romans. 7:12). He never said the law was bad or evil. But he said that when we yield to sin, we take that which is good and twist it to our destruction which reveals how much sin corrupts.

Then he says, Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful (Romans 7:13).

When we are committed to walking in God’s version of love, accepting the commandments as the absolute standard, trusting the Holy Spirit to empower us, we will never twist the commandments into legalism. In fact, we will show the world the true nature and character of God!
