These are the testimonies I hear everywhere I go! What is the secret to these types of results? Simple! Heart Physics! Years ago I began writing a series of books entitled Leadership That Builds People. The first message in the series focuses on building the heart of a leader. The second focuses on building the leaders around you. And the focal point of the soon to be released final volume of the trilogy is ministering to the hearts of believers.
Like the Greeks of Paul’s day, we want knowledge, information, and philosophical wisdom. "Jews require a sign and the Greeks seek after wisdom." (1 Cor. 1:22) We want to be students, not disciples. Students gather information and debate with students from other schools of thought. In the end, at best they become the winner of the debate with no real power to live in the life of Christ!
At its very best knowledge only serves to massage our ego. "Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. "(1 Cor. 8:1) Knowledge wins arguments while losing at life! Jesus called us to be disciples, not students. Disciples want to live like their teacher lives. And disciples of Christ experience the grace of God to live in a power beyond their own capacity!
Ministry to the heart, or ministry to the mind? If you are a minister you might ask, “Which one best describes how I attempt to influence people?” Or if you are a believer listening to sermons you might ask, “What is it that I am searching for? Do I want to know what Jesus knew, or do I really want to live like Jesus lives?” The next question is, “If I am seeking to influence my heart, how am I doing that?”
The life of the believer is supposed to be a place of rest! It is a place where we tap into the grace of God and free ourselves from the endless efforts to “live right!” It is the place where we are empowered to live right - the place where grace and faith righteousness spring forth effortlessly! For he who has entered his rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. (Heb. 4:10)
Every believer has had those random experiences where they believe for something that occurs so effortlessly there is no doubt that it is the power of God. But few believers have the faintest idea of how to have that experience with every issue of life! This happens very specifically because we are not seeking God with our heart as much as we are with our mind!
Our grasp of intellectual information rarely translates into “heartfelt” beliefs that effortlessly transform our lives. It is this void, this feeling of lack and hopelessness that leads us directly into the false security of religious legalism! Paul asked the Galatian believers, "Are you going to continue this craziness? For only crazy people would think they could complete by their own efforts what was begun by God. If you weren't smart enough or strong enough to begin it, how do you suppose you could perfect it? "(Gal. 3:5, TMB)
In Matthew 11 Jesus contrasted His “philosophy” of God to that of the contemporary religious teaching. "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. 29 Walk with me and work with me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace." (Matt 11:28-29, TMB) He knew people who tried to do it through their best efforts would end up in one of two extremes: extremely worn out or extremely self-righteous.
In the KJV He made the classic statement: "Take my yoke upon you and learn of me!" The yoke He referred to was His yoke of teaching. His philosophical concepts - His theology! The results of accepting His philosophy of ministry is a life that is easy and light! He went on to say, "My yoke is easy and my burden is light!"
This is the acid test: Is our life easy or hard? Is godly living easy or hard? Does the burden of life seem heavy or light? This is the one place we can know if we are experiencing ministry to the heart or to the head!
Without exception, anybody can change anything in their life if they change their heart! The question is, do you know how to change your heart? Do you know how to minister to others in a way that will empower them to change their heart
